Policies

1. Appointments

Massage appointments can be scheduled Monday - Saturday from 11:00 am - 6 pm.

Massage appointments are available Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm (last appointment time). Sunday appointments may be available depending on LMT availability. To ensure appointment availability, it is suggested that a regular series of appointments be scheduled.

All massages booked are for the actual time requested. An hour massage is 60 minutes; a half hour massage is 30 minutes etc. In scheduling the appointment 5 minutes is allotted for getting ready for the massage, and 10 minutes for getting redressed and leaving. So for an hour massage, expect to spend 75 minutes, for a 1.5-hour massage 105 minutes, etc. The first visit takes up to and additional ½ hour for completing paperwork, taking a client history, performing a client evaluation, and discussing policies and procedures. Whenever possible all paperwork will be emailed to the client in advance to save time.

If you have questions or wish to discuss something, please inform the massage therapist prior to beginning the massage. Discussion will take place during the scheduled appointment time before the massage begins. In order to maintain the ON TIME commitment. Discussion between appointments is not possible.

With all appointments we ask that the client be prepared for the therapists arrival. Having a plan for where the therapists will set up helps things to run smoother. In the case of a residential treatment the therapist will not set up in a bedroom. It is best to find an area that is quiet and relaxing.

If the client is late for the appointment, the time left will be used to its best advantage. The client is responsible for paying for the entire scheduled session. If the therapist is late for the appointment, only the time actually available to perform the massage will be charged to the client. Due to scheduling, all appointments must end at the scheduled time.

2. Sanitation and Hygiene

All equipment and linens that come into contact with the client will be cleaned in an approved method. All lubrications will be dispensed in a contamination free manner.

The LMT will wash hands and forearms with soapy water and a disinfecting solution before and after each massage. Any breaks in the skin of the LMT will be covered with protective coverings.

The clients will come to the massage appointment freshly bathed when possible. The client will inform the LMT of any breaks in their skin and/or rashes, and these areas will be avoided.

Should the LMT or the client contract a contagious disease that could be spread during the massage session (cold, flu, other droplet or air born infections) each will inform the other. The decision to reschedule will be handled in a case-by-case fashion.

Scented lubricants will not be used unless requested. In the case of seated massage there will not be any lubricants used. The LMT will not use perfumes or other chemicals. It is requested that the clients remove perfumes and hair sprays before attending the session if possible.

Smoking is not allowed.

3. Scope of practice

Massage Professionals are trained in the use of manual techniques to normalize the soft tissue of the body. Therapeutic massage is intended to be a health enhancing system that promotes body balance and efficient body function. Massage stimulates the natural restorative processes of the body and mechanically reduces muscle tension. These benefits reduce the detrimental effects of daily stress. These methods may not be used to diagnose or treat any specific, preexisting condition without written permission from the client’s physician. Any situations that may arise, that the LMT feels should be evaluated by another professional, will require the LMT to refer you to your personal; physician. If requested, the LMT will provide a referral list. LMT’s do not work within the parameters of licensed medical professionals, therefore, LMT’s do not diagnose or prescribe for a particular body dysfunction nor are they allowed to provide treatment for a specific condition. The LMT is required to refer you for diagnosis and follow recommendations of your physician.

Massage therapy is utilized for stress reduction and health enhancement. Massage is a beneficial addition to many other therapies that deal with chronic pain, circulation difficulties, joint problems, anxiety, and depression, etc. so long as the progress is supervised by a licensed medical professional.

The LMT is a skilled practitioner of safe, structured touch that is beneficial for many life hurts, aches, and pains. Massage is a nurturing experience that is pleasurable and provides a method for individuals to take care of themselves.

Massage is a maintenance system and the benefits are cumulative. It is best to receive a 1-hour massage every week to reduce the physical stress that builds in the body. Appointments scheduled every other week, combined with gentle stretching and other self-help methods are also sufficient. Monthly appointments may be sufficient for those who are effectively dealing with stress management. Occasional appointments provide temporary symptomatic relief, but cumulative effects of the therapeutic massage are lost if massage therapy is not utilized on a regular basis.

4. Professional boundaries

In order for the LMT to best serve the client, honest disclosure of any situation that may interfere with safe nurturing, non-judgmental touch must be considered. The LMT needs to consider their own personal needs, biases, fears, concerns, and limitations. Through a careful and honest review of ourselves, we have acknowledged that at this time we are not able to give our best care in the following situations:

Small children
Ethic or sexual jokes
Politics
Religion

Please realize that this decision is based on our personal limitations and in no way reflects on you as an individual. We are happy to refer you to another LMT who does not have the same situation as us, and is better able to provide, for you, the safe healing touch you deserve.

Because the professional relationship works best in the boundaries of the professional setting, any request for time to be spent outside of the scheduled massage session will be declined. Please do not ask.

5. Special situations

We are a mobile service. We do our best to provide a relaxing setting with the tools we bring, but please keep in mind that we cannot carry an entire office with us. We do our best to anticipate your needs, but please feel free to make your requests at the time of scheduling.

We take special effort to make sure that our clients and our therapists are safe at all times. Please respect our efforts at enforcing safety.

Our therapists are sent out in teams to keep everyone safe.

6. Respect of Client Boundaries

In this partnership, it is important that the client is honest and open with the massage therapist. Feedback, to the LMT. About the effectiveness of the work, situations that may have been uncomfortable to you, massage techniques that you enjoyed, massage techniques that you did not like, etc., is very important. The LMT needs to know if you have any areas that are of particular importance to you, or behavior you feel is offensive. Consider the following questions:

Is there a body area that you would like me not to work with?

Would you prefer that I not use a certain type of lubricant?

Do you have a particular religious belief that is important that I respect?

Is there anything that particularly bothers you: a sound, a word, and a smell that you would be more comfortable if I avoid it?

Do you or do you not enjoy music during the massage? What types?

Please feel free to share this information with me as you become aware of it. Sometime it is hard to remember our areas that are sensitive until they are touched.

If at any time you feel that another LMT would better serve you, please ask for a referral. If at any time anyone affiliated with HandsOnWheelsAZ does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell him or her, they will not be offended.

Respect for client boundaries is very important. In order to maintain respect for each client and establish professional boundaries the following apply:

The client may choose to leave on as much clothing as they feel comfortable with.

Permission will be asked prior to shifting the position of any article of clothing to massage the covered area.

The client will be modestly draped at all times. Only the area being massaged will be undraped. The client will be kept in formed of the area to be massaged.

The breast and genital area will not be massaged under any circumstances. Permission will be asked before working close to those areas, otherwise a professional distance will be maintained.

Sexual interaction or discussion of any kind between the client and the LMT is NEVER appropriate. It is understandable that the closeness of the massage relationship may, on occasion be interpreted as sensual. This is a physical response that is part of the natural relaxation response and only lasts a few moments before the physical sensations shift to a deep feeling of relaxation. Requests for sexual activity will not be tolerated, viewed as solicitation, and reported to the proper authority. No exceptions.

Children, under the age of 18, will not be seen without a parent or guardian present in the therapy room.

The therapy room door is never locked.

The client may discontinue the massage at any time and is free to leave.

The client may refuse any massage methods.

Visitors may be present during the massage at your request. Please no children under the age of 12.

It is statistically reported that 1in 3 people have experienced physical or sexual abuse some time in their life. It is important that the touch of the LMT is empowering, safe, healing touch, and controlled by the client. Many remember the abuse and many do not. Disassociation: not feeling your body, a sense of being uneasy or uncomfortable may occur with certain types of touch. It is not necessary for you to tell us your story. What is important is that the touch you experience from the LMT is safe touch and that your need to experience touch are respected now. We will need your help. Please feel free to say NO or STOP at any time. All the choices about how you will be touched, how you will be positioned, how much clothing you remove, etc., are entirely up to you. If you are working with other professionals in your healing and integrating process, it is important that we are able to contact them and be part of the team. If you are not utilizing resources that are available to help, we are happy to provide referrals.

7. Phone calls

Most phone calls are answered by voice mail. We do not answer the phone when we are in a session. Phone calls are returned during business hours Monday –Saturday. Business hours are Monday- Friday 11:00- 7:00 pm, Saturday 12:00pm- 4:00 pm. Please leave a message and phone number where you can be reached during these hours. If the phone call is not returned during the next scheduled day, please call back.

8. Confidentially and Conversation

The discussion between LMT and client is confidential. The client may choose to talk during the massage or not. It is inappropriate for the LMT to discuss their personal life with the client. We are happy to listen to your conversation and share our professional expertise where appropriate. We prefer to not discuss topics of a religious, political, or sexual nature.

If we should share a self- help technique with you or teach you an exercise or stretch, remember that the decision to incorporate this information into your life style is entirely up to you. A client is not obligated to do any self help techniques however, the techniques shared may increase the effectiveness of the massage.

We may be requires to release records under a court order, or to your doctor. We are obligated to report suspicion of child abuse to the proper authorities.

9. Existing and new medical Conditions

It is the responsibility of the client to keep the LMT informed of any medical treatment they are undergoing and provide written permission from the physician, chiropractor, physical therapist, etc., that the massage may be continued. The client must also keep the LMT informed of any changes in their condition.

10. Effect and Methods of massage

There are many different types of massage methods. Most act upon the nervous system to shift sensory signals. Others work more mechanically with the connective tissues. If the methods that are used are of the more mechanical type it is not uncommon to feel as if one has over exercised. This “good tenderness” should not last more that 48 hours. If it does please inform the LMT and he or she will adjust the intensity of the methods and shift to a more reflexive approach as necessary. Because much of the connective tissue has high water content, it is important to rehydrate the system before and after a massage. Drinking the recommended eight 8 oz glasses of pure water is a good start.

11. Informed consent

The client must read the above information carefully. The intake session provides time for the LMT to discuss each section of the policies contained in this document. The client has the opportunity to ask questions. The client must sign the following.

I, ___________________________________________________, have read the information contained in the professional policies ad procedures. I have had the opportunity to discuss this document with the LMT. I understand and agree to comply with the professional policies as explained in this document. Any additional questions I have listed below and the LMT has answered them to my satisfaction. I understand that the therapeutic massage promises no long-term results and will not cure my health problems.
